Styles of Solar Lighting

Solar power is a fast expanding field, and lighting is one of the most common residential uses. With that in mind, it's no wonder there's such a variety of solar-powered lighting available. Landscaping and sidewalk lamps, emergency lighting, and security lighting are just a few of the products available.

The most common use of solar-powered lighting is in outdoor landscaping. In these applications a small solar panel captures sunlight to charge a battery within the lamp, providing power for after the sun goes down. Small lamps for lining walkways or gardens are very convenient ways to add a touch of style and safety to any home. These turn on automatically at night, powering themselves completely through power stored during the daylight hours. Outdoor security spotlights, incorporating both solar panels and motion detectors, help light the way to the door while discouraging burglars.

Similar lighting styles include tall "tiki torch" type lamps, illuminated address displays, and ornamental hanging lamps, among many others.

In emergencies, such as power-outages and roadside problems, solar power can be of great value. Solar panels can charge batteries in flashlights, small solar kits can even be used as a backup power source in the home for lighting. Emergency power supplies, radios, and lanterns are often combined into a single device. Some of these use solar power, or a combination of different methods, to charge their batteries.

Solar power has a reputation for making things cheaper and easier. Lighting one's front and backyard with solar lighting costs nothing to upkeep and eliminates tiresome installation and wiring. These conveniences, saving time and money, can allow any homeowner to focus on the pleasure of their lawn and garden.
