The 3 Things You Must Have to Run Solar Power For Homes

The 3 Things You Must Have to Run Solar Power For Homes

You've been considering using solar power for homes, but don't know whether it's right for you. It is possible to generate enough power to sell electricity back to the power company. Of course, you'll want to research your property and power needs. Here are the three things you must have to generate solar power at your site.

#1: The Sunshine Must Be Able to Reach Your Site. The sun can power any home. But before you install solar panels, you need to consider the amount of sun that has access to your house. Any obstruction, not just trees, rain, and clouds, will keep your solar panels from working efficiently. You don't have to live in the desert. Solar panels will work in the Northwest. But you could still end up paying quite a bit of money for power.

So, survey your site. Is it sunny most of the year? Do you have a lot of rain or cloud cover? Is your yard filled with trees? The first key of efficient solar power is access to the sun.

#2: The Panels Must Face the Sun: Your site can be deceptive.

You won't get the full benefit of your solar panels if you must install them on a side of the roof that gets sun for only a few hours. Make sure that you install the solar panels in the area that receives the most sunlight. It's worth your time to lay out a plan for where you're going to place your solar panels and note the number of sunny hours for that spot each day.

#3: You Must Hook into the Grid Correctly. You're not done when you generate the power. Most people will still need to be hooked into the grid, though some of the time you will be selling power to the electric company rather than the other way around. To do this efficiently, you have to make sure you hook into the electric grid correctly. And the hook up point may have a bearing on where you can install your panels.

Plan where to install the solar panels, where you'll hook into the grid, how you'll hook into the meter, and how you'll know when you are a net consumer of electricity and when you are a net producer, and selling excess electricity back to the power company.

Make sure you have these three things and you're in a good position to run solar power for homes. If you decide that solar power is for you, you can save yourself time and literally thousands of dollars by building your solar system yourself. It generally costs less than $200 a panel and you can do it in a couple of weekends.
